The One About the Selfie

This morning I was deleting the random photos I take throughout the day — you know, the screen shots, photos of recipes, bad photos, and the occasional selfie — and I stumbled on this photo this morning while on the train. I took it yesterday when trying on this hat. I wanted to see what I would look like and see if spending the $30 was worth it (spoiler alert: it wasn’t).

It’s strange that we live in a society in which we can see what we look like anytime we want. We can take a photo and delete and then repeat the process like it’s nothing. You’d think after growing up in this culture I would be used to it, seeing myself.

I just wanted to share this photo (I edited it in black and white and then decided to show you the color version too) because, well, I don’t know why. I don’t know why I find this picture startling. I don’t know why I can’t stop looking at it. It’s not vanity… it’s something else. Curiosity? I don’t know. I don’t look like myself but maybe I do. Maybe this is what others see that I don’t always see.

Anyways, life is weird.

Happy Monday!
